Military Service
Each branch of the military has a liaison officer who
visits the Highland High School campus routinely throughout the year to
discuss training and educational opportunities. Students can check the
schedule in the counseling office. |

When to Apply
Students
interested in attending a military academy should begin the formal
application process in their junior year as a considerable amount of
work will be required from students, parents, school officials, liaison
officers, state political leaders, and academy officials. Following each
academy’s application timeline is critical.
Preparation
Students
should begin this process as early as possible in high school as
completion for acceptance is rigorous. Candidates will need to
demonstrate strength in academics (English, math, and science),
athletics, leadership in school and community, and physical stamina.
Each academy’s specific requirements can be found on its web site.
How to Begin
Interested students should complete the following activities:
- See your high school counselor as early as possible in high school.
- Study the websites for each academy.
- Talk with military officers/current academy students if possible.
- Visit at least one academy if possible.
ROTC
HHS
offers students the opportunity to participate in the Army Junior
Reserve Officer Training Corp (JROTC) program. Along with the
curriculum, students may participate in drill team/color guard
activities, air rifle team, orienteering team, adventure team, and
community service. Army instructors provide students assistance in
applying for military scholarships. No military obligation is incurred
through participation in the JROTC program.
At the
post-secondary level, many opportunities are available through college
ROTC programs. The following web sites provide information on career
opportunities, training, and available scholarships for students seeking
an education through the military.
